# UC Davis Primate Center Demo - Friday July 15th 10:30 AM
University of California Laboratories routinely perform cruel
experiments on primates and on many other species. Rhesus monkeys are
confined to restraint chairs with electrodes inserted into their
brains and restraining bars literally bolted to their skulls.
Experiments such as this often lead to diseases like encephalitis,
meningitis, etc. These projects also deprive the primates of water for
extended periods -- up to 23 hours per day for 5 days per week.
Primates imprisoned in laboratories often are driven insane by
captivity engaging in self-mutilation and stereotypical behavior.
Your help is needed to bring an end to these heinous projects. These
experiments and more are paid for with your tax dollars. We estimate
that UC labs receive these funding amounts per year for animal
experiments:

University of California, San Francisco -- $200 million
University of California, Los Angeles -- $188 million
University of California, Davis -- $148 million

# The Simnuke Project - Location Changed!
 Friday, July 15, 2005 - Sunday, July 17, 2005
4:00 PM Location: North of Reno, NV
Due to wildfires in Southern Nevada, Simnuke has had to change locations to a playa in the Reno area.

Contact trinity@simnuke.org for more information or to reserve a space!

Simnuke is a large scale 3-part memorial reaction to the atomic age being created by a group of artists from the Bay Area and beyond. An excerpt from Simnuke's website (www.simnuke.org) briefly describes the components and intentions of the project:

********************************************************
On July 16, 1945 at 05:29:45 local time (Mountain War Time), a team of scientists reached the culmination of the Manhattan Project, the first test of a nuclear weapon. The event was code-named "Trinity".

On July 16, 2005 at 05:29:45 local time we will commemorate the 60-year anniversary of Trinity by simulating the look and feel of the detonation of a nuclear device. To do this, we are building what is possibly the world's largest flame creating machine.

In the 60 years since that world-changing moment that was the Trinity detonation, the Bomb has permeated the collective consciousness, shaped generations, economies, and nations, and within the last decade almost completely disappeared. Children today barely know the fears of the nuclear age.

We will create a somber memorial, a reminder to modern society of the grim destructive power that looms over everyday life. The fireball we are creating is a symbol - an awakening call to the persistent threat of nuclear destruction. This simulation is not a glorification of the destructive power of nuclear weapons.

The Simnuke Project seeks to illustrate the needless threat of such limitless, destructive energy in the hope that no one will ever again experience the devastation of the real thing.

A gallery show in San Francisco will accompany this event in the desert, allowing artists working in a variety of mediums to delve into the implications of atomic weapons that have pervaded our lives for the last 60 years. Additionally, we will plant 60 trees as a lasting and healing memorial grove.
*******************************************************

The first, and centerpiece, of the 3 parts - the simulated detonation - will occur at an event in vicinity of Las Vegas on the early morning of July 16th, and you are cordially invited to attend. In addition to the flame effect, the desert event will also include a series of music & performances as well as a reflective discussion on the past, present and future implications of the atomic age. Also included: light hors d'oeuvres, a morning waffle breakfast, and a campout lasting the remainder of the weekend.

The project is actively seeking performers & contributors for the desert event!! Dancers, performance artists, musicians/bands, djs...pretty much anything either speaks in some way about the performer's reflections on the atomic age and atomic weaponry, or simply contributes to filling the event with thoughtfulness and/or information about nuclear policy & the atomic age. Additionally, we have a need for volunteers at the event and will comp a portion of the suggested donation in exchange.

Wired Magazine, NPR, Weekend America, and other national media will be in attendance, and the project is supported by The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, The Nuclear Policy Research Institute, and Tree New Mexico, in addition to several private supporters. Ticket donations and other contributions are tax deductible.

For more details about the desert event as well as information on how to reserve a ticket, please visit:
simnuke.org/trinity.html

**The suggested donation is just that...suggested...and Simnuke does not wish to prohibit attendance simply due to lack of funds. Please contact us if you wish to come but cannot afford the suggested rate.

Please feel free to direct any questions related to the desert event to:
trinity@simnuke.org

I wholeheartedly encourage you to browse the Simnuke website for greater detail on the background & scope of the project as well as information on the amazing artists who are behind it.

And while you're at it, pop over and take a look at the write-up the project received in June's Wired magazine!

Best wishes to you all,

# Fri July 15 5-8 PM Supervisor Mirkarimi hosts Third Friday's Art Reception
Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi Hosts Art Opening Commemorating
the 60th Anniversary of the Hiroshima Bombing

On Friday, July 15th, 2005, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi hosts the monthly Third Friday’s Art Reception in his City Hall office, Room 282. In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, this month’s featured artists are Lewis Suzuki and Iri and Toshi Maruki.

Lewis Suzuki was born in Los Angeles and studied art in Japan, New York, and California.
His watercolors are bold and impressionistic and enrich and strengthen the spirit of the viewer. Through his art, Mr. Suzuki hopes to give a sense of joy and hope in our difficult and changing world.

“I feel that art has a place in enriching the life of humanity.
Through my art, I hope to strengthen that part of culture.”
 --Lewis Suzuki

Iri and Toshi Maruki traveled to Hiroshima three days after the bomb was dropped and witnessed the destruction first hand; several relatives and many friends perished. Three years passed before the Maruki’s were able to begin to paint what they had seen and this helped them to heal emotionally. Nine hundred sketches were merged together to create the first paintings.
“It is a dreadful, cruel scene, but I wanted to paint it with kindness.”
 --Toshi Maruki

“If people don’t drop the bomb, it will not fall.”
 --Iri and Toshi Maruki

What: Green Convergence at Bohemia for Peace and Justice

When: Friday, July 15th- Sunday, July 17th Where: Bohemian Grove is located in the Sonoma County Russian River community of Monte Rio, near the intersection of Hwy. 116 and Bohemian Highway. It is accessible on the Sonoma Transit bus #20 from Santa Rosa Transit Mall.

Mark Your Calendar. Plan your mid-summer excursion to protest the war profiteers as they come to Bohemian Grove, yet again, to cremate their "Cares of the Marketplace". Join local Greens, veterans' groups, corporate responsibility organizations, faith groups, students, people who have never protested before, and the Green Party of California as they converge at Bohemian Grove and call for an end to the Carelessness of their leaders.

Why: Each year, in mid-summer, the elite members of the Bohemian Club in San Francisco gather for two weeks of revelry and "throwing off the cares of the marketplace" among the redwood groves along Sonoma County's Russian River. The club's members include many Presidents, past and present. George H.W. Bush are members, as well as the late Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, and every Republican President since Herbert Hoover.

But the root of the Grove's power is the men who support the efforts of "their' presidents, like they have with the current war in the Middle East. Critics call these gatherings anything but the innocent camaraderie among a group of men who happen to carry the cares of the world on their shoulders all year and just want to party for a couple of weeks.

Corporation executives and owners at the highest levels have gathered with prominent men in politics at Bohemian Grove and built networks that critics say sustains their acquisition of power and wealth throughout the year.

Who: Groups and individuals so far endorsing the Convergence Include Green Party of California, Green Party of Sonoma County, Green Party of Humboldt Co., Green Party of Mendocino County, Emerald Greens, Bohemian Grove Action Network, Veterans for Peace, Mendocino, Veterans for Peace, Garberville, Bill Meyers, Democracy Unlimited*, Dave Cobb, Green Presidential candidate, Ralph Nader, green Presidential candidate. Peter Camejo, Green Vice-Presidential candidate, Peter Phillips, Sonoma State University faculty, expert on Bohemian Grove, International Indian Treaty Council, and a growing list

# Palo Alto KFC protest.

Where: KFC, 2305 El Camino Real, Palo Alto (corner of El Camino and
Cambridge)
When: Saturday, July 16, 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Free parking is available on side streets, as well as in a garage
behind KFC.

The chickens raised by KFC's suppliers have their beaks sliced off,
and many suffer crippling leg deformities because they are bred to
grow so large so quickly that their legs cannot support their weight.
These normally friendly and inquisitive birds are packed into broiler
sheds where they are forced to breathe ammonia-laden air, the result
of living in their own waste. When it comes time for slaughter,
chickens are often still conscious as their throats are slit or when
they are dumped into tanks of scalding water used for feather
removal. For further information about PETA's KFC campaign, visit
http://www.kfccruelty.com

I'll have signs and leaflets on hand, but feel free to bring your
own. If you have any questions, please contact me at

The Crucible 1260 7th St Oakland, CA 94607
http://www.thecrucible.org/calendar/faf_05.html

# clear channel/ fire arts festival
i guess i should have looked closer at who the
CRUCIBLE was recieving funds from for this event ....
the one sponsor that stood out is CLEAR CHANNEL.
a company that is in league w/ the bush administration
and the fcc to selectivly take away our rights to free speech
and freedom of expression.....
i'd also be concerned w/ signing over your rights to the
performance materials you'll be using, you have no rights
to publicize your group for this event, & they get the sole
rights to make money off any video footage they get without
giving the artists a cut.....the contract we recieved had over a
100 pages missing from it, who in their right mind would sign this?
what the f?...
how could this happen? who the f let this happen?
you might as well sell your soul to satan, you fools.....

hey, i love the crucible and all it has to offer, but come on....
do you not know about clear channel??

for more info about clear channel,
and their plan of world media domination go to:

# Last year Fire Arts festival was $10. This year it is $25-75, and so FOR PROFIT

More About the Dixie Revival
On June 16th in the middle of the night, someone actually smashed Carol Queen and Robert’s beloved truck, Dixie, when it was parked on the street. Carol and Robert were not in it, so they were not injured, but it was a hit and run accident, so there is no insurance to cover it. Dixie is truly a great truck, and she has done much volunteer work for the Center for Sex and Culture, carting around everything from food to furniture. She is very progressive and a hard worker.

Dixie (her actual name) is a very historic truck! Reportedly she was once owned by a lesbian attorney couple who helped win Lawrence vs. Texas. The owner before Carol and Robert was a public interest attorney who defended the elderly against fraud.

The damages total to Dixie over $5,000 and it cost nearly $2,000.00 to get her running again. After that Robert will try to do the remaining work. They need this truck to keep the Center for Sex and Culture running, of course. Founding and running the CSC has been a labor of love for them; neither Carol nor Robert gets any kind of payment from that work. Robert’s on disability and Carol handles the rest of their bills with her freelance work and her half-time job at Good Vibrations.

"Aaron Glantz's courageous unembeded journalism explains the reality of the US invasion and occupation of Iraq with a clarity and perspective sorely lacking in mainstream media." - Amy Goodman, host Democracy Now!
OCCUPATION AND RESISTANCE: THE CONFLICT IN IRAQ
With Pacifica Radio journalist and author of "How America Lost Iraq"
 AARON GLANTZ
And a screening of "FELLUJA 2004"
Wednesday, July 20 at 7 pm
New College of California, 766 Valencia St @ 19th St., SF - FREE
The unprovoked massacre of Iraqi civilians by US troops in Fellujah in early 2004 became a turning point in the occupation of Iraq. As the Iraqi people endured continued violence and chaos, an armed resistance gained wider support. Aaron Glantz will speak about the situation in Iraq, followed by Toshikuni DOI's remarkable documentary film, Felluja 2004.
Aaron Glantz, author of "How America Lost Iraq" and reporter for Pacifica Radio and other media outlets, has visited Iraq three times during the U.S. occupation.
Falluja 2004 (55 min.): Toshikuni DOI was in Falluja two weeks after the US invasion. He was one of the few international journalists able to show the reality of the invasion.

The International Code of Signals serves to facilitate communication at sea. It defines the meaning of alphabetical identification codes for safety and navigation purposes. The key for "sending" was drafted by a committee of the British Board of Trade in 1855 and published in 1857. The 1969 edition, revised in 2003, is still in use today. We have expanded the flag alphabet, not just so that it also includes the @ sign, but so that city dwellers have access to pure communication. The flag alphabet will be taught in a workshop lasting several hours. After a few days set aside for study and practice, we would like, in the form of a competition, to send an identical message cross the city over two equally long routes simultaneously. Will it work?

Last month we were placed inside, in front of the Slanted Door resturant, but we could be moved to another location inside, so just wander around and look for all the beautiful hoopdancers and listen for bumpin' music. The Ferry Building is located on the Embarcadero, downtown

# Community Forum on the Sydeshow Controversy Fri July 22 8 pm-10 pm Free
In the context of an African community facing school
closures, festival shut-downs, no art and music
programs, the sideshows are a culmination of their
being no venues for self-expression and advancement
for young African people. The city of Oakland is using
the sideshows as the latest excuse to push black
people out and make way for white corporations and
homeowners who do not value African life.

latest details.

2:00 ~ 6:00 PM, American University
Collaboration strategy brainstorm among truth movement leaders, veteran &
victim family groups, indie media activists and foreign journalists.

OVERALL PURPOSE
Potent insights into the coup d'état we face emerge whenever citizens
working on Iraq lies, 9/11, troop abuse, stolen elections and/or the
"missing" government trillions gather and compare notes. This DC Emergency
Truth Convergence presumes that we now have enough dangerous truths,
damning facts, and populist media to deliver the evidence of treachery
throughout the land. It's now time to clarify that vision, join with
veterans and victim families, and assist media activists everywhere in
reenacting Paul Revere.

THE CHALLENGE TO INDIE MEDIA ACTIVISTS

Truth Math 101: In 2004, 70% of Karl Rove's red voters still believed
Saddam had WMD and trysts with Al Qaeda. 70% of Americans who knew the
truth voted blue. According to Zogby, most New Yorkers reject the official
9/11 story. The blues carried New York by over one million votes and NYC
by 81%. Do the math. Truth matters. Truth matters more when the country's
in crisis. Truth matters most when thousands are dying without a clue.
This is the challenge facing our independent media. Leaders selling war,
repression and corporate rule could fool a lot less people a lot less of
the time if indie media flooded the streets and airwaves with badly needed
truths. Today's bloody liars are red. Tomorrow's may be blue. Only
grassroots media vigilance and collaboration can thwart their propaganda
and reverse their corporate coup. George Orwell taught us, "in a time of
universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." Multiply that
act by a thousand street zines, blogs, and community broadcast outlets and
we can finally overthrow this coup.

Please come to DC and
END THE FEAR HERE!

Behind the Endless War

# 40 Downing Street Memo events in US on July 23rd
Mourn the Losses, Learn the Truth, and Investigate the Lies
There are currently 40 events planned around the country for Saturday,
July 23, the three-year anniversary of the famous meeting on Downing
Street. It's definitely not too late to make it 41. Early next week
we'll announce these events to the media.

 Downing Street Memo-Gate: Rally
 Downing Street Minutes 3rd Anniversary
Grand Lake Theatre 3200 Grand Ave  Oakland, CA.
You're invited to be part of a national day of action on July 23.
The Downing Street memo is a shocking document, which reveals that the Bush administration "fixed" facts to sell the case for war. If George Bush engaged in a conspiracy to deceive Congress and the American people about the basis for going to war, that would constitute a High Crime and would be grounds for impeachment. MPJC is part of a coalition After Downing Street working with Rep. John Conyers to publicize this memo and demand accountability.
 *      Examine the Bush Administration's justification for war.
 *      Were intelligence and facts fixed?
 *      The American people deserve to know the truth!

FREE lecture on drug policy reform
San Francisco is once again at the center of a national debate. More than 80% of San Franciscans say medical marijuana should be legally available and a majority even supports regulating, controlling, and taxing marijuana more or less like alcohol. But the federal government says "no" to medical marijuana, just as patients, advocates, bureaucrats, and politicians in San Francisco attempt to create a regulatory system in response to the proliferation of "pot clubs." Will "the city that knows how" do the right thing? Mayor Gavin Newsom and Drug Policy Alliance director Ethan Nadelmann will tackle the controversial question, "Is San Francisco Going to Pot?"

Simnuke Art Exhibit Indicts Sixty Years of the Atomic Age at
San Francisco's RX Gallery From July 28 through August 25

San Francisco, a city known for activism and creativity, will host the
emotional and politically charged Simnuke Art Exhibit on July 28th, 7pm
to midnight, at Rx Gallery, 132 Eddy Street. Over the last sixty years,
people
all over the world have lived with the looming threat of nuclear arms.
For the artists exhibiting in the Simnuke Art Exhibit, this struggle
expresses itself through searing commentary and stunning artwork
condemning the nuclear arms race.

The Simnuke Art Exhibit is part of the Simnuke Project, a three-part
memorial to the atomic age. On July 16, 2005 at 05:29:45 local time the
Simnuke Project will commemorate the 60-year anniversary of Trinity by
simulating the look and feel of the detonation of a nuclear device.

The art of the Simnuke Art Exhibit is co-curated by Sasha Harris-Cronin
and Max Carlson and comprises 20 artists from the United States and
Japan. The exhibit pieces will range from photography to kinetic
sculpture, from humorous statements to solemn exposés. In addition,
there will be an exhibit of government documents from the Prelinger
Library tracing the history of the atomic era in public policy.

The artists in the Simnuke Art Exhibit include: Carole Gallagher,
Michael Light, Richard Ross, Aaron Ximm, Yosuke Yamahata, Bryan Cole,
Robert Dohrmann, Joy Garnett, Jenne Giles, Mark Henson, Garret Izumi,
Tracy Jacobs, Kerry Loewen, Yoshiko McFarland, Yumiko Oda, Astrid
Olafsen, Aryana Farsai Roxborough, Corrine Schulze, Elin O'Hara Slavick,
and Jeff Young.

As global nuclear proliferation blooms into reality, and the United
States moves ahead with so-called tactical "bunker busters" and nuclear
arms in space, it is critical that this powerful collection reach an
audience. Co-curator Sasha Harris-Cronin stated, "If we can make one
person leave the gallery, go home, and write their congressperson, then
we have made a difference."

Greenbelt Alliance's vision is of a vibrant San Francisco Bay Area with a healthy environment and a strong economy shared by all. In our vision, central cities and existing suburbs are desirable places to live bounded by a protected greenbelt. This greenbelt includes agricultural, wilderness, habitat, watershed, and recreational lands and is recognized as essential to the Bay Area's environmental and economic health. All residents share a high quality of life, including access to affordable housing, a good education, cultural amenities, effective public transportation and open space. Finally, there is a widely shared ethic that recognizes the region's interdependence and a system of governance that fosters effective public decision-making to address regional needs.
